Capturing Community: An Interview with Rasheena Wilson — Volunteer Spotlight
Rasheena Wilson knew wherever she volunteered, she wanted to be using a skill that she enjoyed and was mutually beneficial to the organization and herself. The skill in question? Photography, something she calls a “therapeutic skill.” Throughout her search for an organization to volunteer her services to, she ran across Kensington Soccer Club and her interest had been caught.
“I saw [Kensington Soccer Club] was very well established and loved that it was benefitting a community that can definitely use a lot more positive insight,” she said. “Researching Kensington Soccer Club, understanding how established it is, and all the activities it offered to kids of various ages as well as women and men, I was overwhelmed because it’s good to know clubs that can still give back to the community in a unique way.”
Wilson knew she wanted to be a part of our mission to uplift Kensington and continue to remind people of the positivity that our community holds. She applied to our team as a volunteer photographer and began her work with us in late April. Since then, she’s been at numerous sites, capturing the beauty and joy of our work with high-quality photos that resonate with audiences on our social media platforms.
“One of the things I pride myself on is to push myself to provide the highest quality I can,” she said. “Whether it’s a community club or a professional organization, quality speaks value. That resonates with people who are going to be looking at you. That’s a motto I was raised with and I do thank my parents, especially my mom, for teaching me that because it goes a long way.”
According to Wilson, volunteering with Kensington Soccer Club has been an amazing experience. Each event she attends continues to pique her interest in sports and community photography, as well as letting her see first-hand how well-connected our organization is within the community.
“Volunteering is not a waste of time at all, especially with KSC,” she said. “[Kensington Soccer Club] is doing an amazing job and this is coming from someone who was born and raised in Philadelphia. Lending a hand to KSC goes a long way and in times like these, we need established clubs like KSC to remind us of the positivity within the city.”
