Youth Leadership Council Members Speak Out Against Gun Violence

June is Gun Violence Prevention Month. The annual observation was founded in June 2015 after the issue of gun violence became a national.

In recognition of Gun Violence Prevention Month Brianna Banks invited Youth Council Members to send videos of themselves reflecting on the importance of legislation and initiatives to curb gun violence. Scroll below to hear their remarks.

As we also celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride and Juneteenth this month, it is important to remember how the civil rights struggles faced by sexual and racial minorities intersect with this issue of Gun Violence.

Despite the glaring figures that remind us of the intersectionality of the social issues faced by minorities in Kensington and beyond, much of the conversation about these issues is reserved for adults.

At KSC we seek to empower youth through athletics and initatiives that encourage them to speak out about the injustices in their community. Prior to gun violence prevention month, youth joined local leaders and government officials in a conversation about gun violence. At the end of this month, youth have been selected to serve on a panel at the Clubhouse about gun violence. They will be joined by community members who are invited to ask them questions.
